Abstract:

Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV (VCT) and increasing access to male condoms are two common strategies to respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. We assessed these programs among youth in western Kenya with biological and behavioral outcomes.

Date of Collection:

2009-03-2013-05

Country:

Kenya

Geographic Coverage:

Four districts of Kenya’s Western Province (Butere, Mumias and Bungoma South and Bungoma East)

Unit of Analysis:

Individual

Universe:

The survey was conducted in Western Kenya because of the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the population. The sample was composed of youth who were 17 to 24 years old. They were included in a previous RCT (Education, HIV, and Early Fertility: Experimental Evidence from Kenya). Eligibility criteria for participation in this current trial include: 1) participation in the previous RCT, 2) residency in the study districts at baseline, and 3) ability to provide informed consent. Only youth who have attended at least grade 6 were included.

Kind of Data:

Sample survey data

Kind of Data:

Measurement and tests: Physical

Methodology and Processing

Time Method:

Panel

Sampling Procedure:

The study was conducted in Western Kenya due to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the existing infrastructure from the previous RCT The participants were selected due to their participation in a previous RCT (see note on inclusion/exclusion criteria) During the follow-up, the study team attempted to survey all study participants. They first invited all respondents to attend “camps” organized at local health facilities throughout each district. Field officers then attempted to track respondents who had not visited the camps. Those were divided into two types: T1 for those with at least some location and contact information obtained from a relative or teacher and T2 for which we were not able to obtain any location or contact information. 25% of the Type 1 respondents and 10% of Type 2 respondents were randomly selected for further, intensive tracking efforts.
