Abstract:

This dataset was extracted from the Clinical Information Network - Neonatal (CIN - Neonantal) database that was created in 2014. The CIN - Neonatal project captures routine data of newborn unit clinical care processes with an aim to audit documentation, improve documentation, inculcate the culture of use of data for policy and ward decisions and as a platform to embed research studies. The dataset continues to build as data capture happens routinely within the Clinical Information Network participating hospitals in Kenya.

Patient-level data of newborns over a one-year period (2018 - 2019) were retrospectively abstracted from patient records and examined to characterize those referred into and out of three newborn units in the study hospitals. Structural assessments using a checklist completed during hospital visits were used to describe hospitals’ readiness to support newborn referral and transport.
