Abstract:

Abstract: Hong Kong is currently undergoing an abrupt autocratization. In this article, I highlight one of its aspects that is less discussed in the literature: the restructuring of political society. I argue that its political society was transformed by the National Security Law (NSL) in 2020 and the electoral reform of 2021. First, I analyze how the NSL trial against opposition activists has contributed to the disbandment of opposition parties. Next, I describe how the electoral reform has institutionalized the candidate filtering tradition and explain why this reform presents the opposition camp with a lasting dilemma. Lastly, I shed light on how the restructuring can affect the establishment camp and the government.
