The focus of the survey was to collect data on the adoption and intensity of use of soil and water conservation technologies in Kongwa and Kiteto districts of Tanzania. The data includes demographic information about the households (e.g., age, and sex), socioeconomics (crop income, household income, value of production and food security) and farm characteristics (e.g., farm size and livestock ownership).

A multistage random sampling procedure was used to select sample households. In the first stage, five wards (Oluboloti, Njoro, Mlali, Nghumbi and Sagara) were purposively selected from the Kongwa and Kiteto districts where there has been active testing and promotion of soil and water conservation technologies (SWCT). In the second stage, five villages from the five wards were selected using probability proportional to size sampling (PPS). In the final stage, 120 households were randomly selected from each village resulting in 240 households from Kiteto district and 360 households from Kongwa district.
