Abstract:

This study investigated the quality of relationships between young adults and their parents to examine the association between individual maturity and relationship maturity. The data consist of in-depth interviews exploring family relationships (how differences of opinion are handled, care-taking is managed, advice is given and received). The interviews also include questions about child rearing practices and parental awareness; measures of individual psychological development; and measures of individual adjustment and psychological functioning. In addition, a subsample of 31 couples were examined to assess the developmental conception of intimacy.

Using a mixed longitudinal/cross-sectional design, data collection was initiated in1979 and was continued in 1980 and again in 1981 from three cohorts: 22-year-old or 1957 cohort; 24 year-old or 1955 cohort; and 26 year-old or 1953 cohort. A fourth group of 72 new participants, consisting of a 29 year-old or 1951 cohort, was added in the second year of the project, and data were collected from this group again in 1981. There was a total of 432 participants involved in the study, 127 of the participants interviewed once, 137 interviewed twice, and 168 interviewed three times. Eighty of the participants from the four cohorts were again followed-up ten years later, when they were between the ages of 29 to 35 years old.

The Murray Research Archive holds original record paper transcripts of interviews, and audiotapes.

Audio Data Availability Note: This study contains audio data that have been digitized. There are 2824 audio files available.
