Abstract:

This research assessed the acceptability of PVR among postpartum women in sub-Saharan Africa. It was conducted as part of pre-introduction efforts aimed at expanding the method choice and reducing unmet need for contraception during the postpartum period.

The primary objectives of the study were to assess factors influencing: acceptability and perceptions of the PVR by women; providers’ knowledge and attitudes about the PVR and its use; community members’ perceptions about the PVR; and method choice and attitudes about the PVR by non-PVR users.

The study used a prospective design involving follow-up of postpartum women recruited over a period of six months or up to the time of discontinuing PVR use. Data collection involved structured face-to-face interviews at the time of recruitment, and at three and six months of follow-up or at the time discontinuation. This particular dataset presents information collected from 60 postpartum women in Kenya at the time of recruitment.

Country:

Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal

Unit of Analysis:

Individual woman

Kind of Data:

Qualitative data

Methodology and Processing

Sampling Procedure:

Postpartum women (6-9 weeks) were counseled on all contraceptive options appropriate for use during the postpartum period including PVR. Those who chose PVR were instructed that use of the method required enrollment in the study. Women who were interested in participating in the study were screened for eligibility based on pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Those who were eligible were given information about the study, asked to provide informed consent and enrolled.

Type of Research Instrument:

Structured questionnaire with pre-coded responses
