Abstract:

This dataset contains the behavioral and endocrine data for the major analyses reported in "Cost of associating with males for female Bornean and Sumatran orangutans: a hidden form of sexual conflict?" (BEAS-D-20-00297R1; doi: 10.1007/s00265-020-02948-4)

1-ActivityBudget: This file contains behavioral data on (parous) female orangutan activity (feeding, resting, moving and social interaction hours) and association patterns obtained during full-day focal follows at the two long-term study sites Suaq (P. abelii) and Tuanan (P. pygmaeus wurmbii). All variables used in the analyses (LMM) on the variation of active time and F:M ratio in relation to physiological, ecological and social factors are provided.

File: 2-FemHindeIndex.tab

  • Number of cases: 665

  • No. of variables per record: 1

  • Type of File: text/tab-separated-values

2-FemHindeIndex: This file provides behavioral data on the initiation and maintenance of dyadic male-female association units in orang-utans obtained during both male and female focal follows. All variables included in the analysis (GLMM) on the probability that an association was male-maintained are provided in this dataset.

File: 3-DyadicAssociationMaintenance.tab

  • Number of cases: 625

  • No. of variables per record: 1

3-DyadicAssociationMaintenance: This file contains data on the duration (total days) of dyadic male-female and female-female association obtained during (parous) female focal follows. All the variables for the Cox proportional hazard model (survival analysis) on the probability of association maintenance/ending over several consecutive days are provided in this dataset.

Label:

4-FemaleCortisol.tab

Text:

4-FemaleCortisol: This file contains female cortisol metabolite levels measured from non-invasively collected fecal samples of both wild Bornean and Sumatran female orangutans. Fecal samples were stored, extracted and analysed using enzyme immunoessays (Ganswindt et al. 2003) according to an established protocol. The dataset includes additionally all socio-ecological variables (behavioral data from day of reference) that were included in the analysis (LMM) of female orangutan cortisol level variation in relation to ecological and social factors.
