Abstract:

The Population Council is the research partner to DREAMS—a global partnership to reduce HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in 10 sub-Saharan African countries. DREAMS aims to reduce HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women. This dataset is Round 2 data collection with young Malawian women (aged 15–24 years at Round 1) enrolled in DREAMS programming. All respondents also participated in the Round 1 survey. These data are from a Population Council-led implementation science study to assess the reach and effectiveness of DREAMS programming in two catchment areas.

Methodology and Processing

Sampling Procedure:

PEPFAR determined the target DREAMS program areas, with input from local officials and other stakeholders, based on their high HIV prevalence and additional factors, such as high poverty levels, population density, and/or population growth. In each site, implementing partners used systematic selection processes to identify (e.g., visiting and screening households in their community catchment area), recruit, and enroll eligible out-of-school AGYW beneficiaries. Using a census of all AGYW enrolled in DREAMS, study participants were identified using an age-stratified random sample that was proportionate to the differently sized districts.

Round 2 data were collected in 2018, after approximately 12-16 months of exposure to DREAMS programming. For this longitudinal design, we sought to re-interview AGYW who participated in the Round 1 survey. Ultimately, we re-interviewed 75.5% of Malawi’s Round 1 respondents (371 adolescent girls and 883 young women) between September-November 2018.
