This structured dataset includes nominal registries of enslaved laborers and slave families drawn from 923 post-mortem property inventories taken upon the death of estate owners in Vassouras county, Rio de Janeiro province, opened between 1821 and 1888. This dataset lists 30,533 enslaved individuals from various estates. Inventoried estates are listed by the names of the deceased estate owner and executor, as well as the name(s) and location(s) of properties (including enslaved persons) inventoried. Nominal slave registries include a variety of attributes about each listed enslaved person including place of birth, ethnonym, color, age, occupation, juridical status, and marital status. A monetary valuation, assigned by an appraiser, accompanies the large majority of nominal entries for slaves, including unnamed newborns. Descriptions of the inventoried persons include general health and vigor, injuries and disabilities, acute or chronic illness, temperament, and general aptitude for labor. The extracted data includes nominal references to conjugal partners, parentage, and/or children and grandchildren registered in the same inventory. There are select references to the sale, mortgaging, or death of inventoried slaves during probate.
