Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING): As part of the US government’s Feed the Future initiative to address global hunger and food security issues in Africa south of the Sahara, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting three multi-stakeholder agricultural research projects to sustainably intensify key African farming systems. The overall aim is to transform agricultural systems through sustainable intensification projects in West Africa and East and Southern Africa, led by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and in Ethiopian Highlands, led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The International Food Policy Research Institute leads the program’s monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment.

In rural Mali shortage of livestock feed is a challenging phenomenon worsening day by day, particularly in the villages of Kani and Noumpinesso. The significant decrease in crops yield and livestock are due to persistent and continuous land degradation and over grazing. Soil water erosion and inappropriate or ineffective farming systems led to land...
