Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation (Africa RISING): As part of the US government’s Feed the Future initiative to address global hunger and food security issues in Africa south of the Sahara, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting three multi-stakeholder agricultural research projects to sustainably intensify key African farming systems. The overall aim is to transform agricultural systems through sustainable intensification projects in West Africa and East and Southern Africa, led by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and in Ethiopian Highlands, led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). The International Food Policy Research Institute leads the program’s monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment.

This study contains data originated from on-farm trials that were conducted to test and demonstrate the crop yield and economic benefits derived from manual and animal traction conservation agriculture (CA) systems on smallholder farms where the ridge and furrow tillage system is the traditional practice. The farm trials were conducted at six farms...

The objective of the study is to test different plant arrangements between maize and Gliricidia sepium and evaluate its effects on soil quality and productivity. Below is the list of treatments applied during the experiment. Traditional Maize- Groundnuts rotation [with half recommended fertilizer on maize, no fertilizer on groundnuts] Maize-Groundn...

This study contains data originated from on-station trials that were conducted to evaluate the performance of green manure cover crops on crop productivity, and soil quality and residual effects. These trials were conducted at Msekera Research Station in Zambia. The following treatments were used. Maize – sole cropping Maize – Pigeonpea intercroppi...

The data included in this study were collected to assess the health of the soil at four Africa RISING sites: Basona, Michew, Jawe, and Sinana. The data were collected following land degradation surveillance framework (LDSF) whereby within a 10km by 10km sites, we considered 16 clusters of 1km by 1km and within each cluster we have 0.1 ha plots, wit...

Tree Lucerne (Chamaecytisus palmensis) is a multipurpose fodder tree that grows very well in cooler highlands of Ethiopia and can serve as a source of high-quality protein supplement for farm animals. Despite its potential, the level of adoption and utilization is very limited. Africa RISING project in the Ethiopia highlands has conducted action re...

International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), 2019, "Effect of Improved Production Systems on Productivity of Local Chickens in Rural Areas of Babati District, Tanzania", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GXJIBF, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Local chickens in rural areas are mostly kept under minimal input of resources though they contribute significantly to food security, poverty alleviation and ecologically sound management of natural resources. The free-range system is predominant, whilst a few households have adopted a semi-intensive system or intensive system. Under scavenging and...

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), 2019, "Variety and Planting Density Effects on Grain and Fodder Yield of Groundnut, Ghana", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/MQHCRU, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Groundnut is the most important food and feed crop in West Africa. Grain and fodder yields on farmers field in Ghana are low due to limited use of improved varieties and inappropriate agronomic practices such as low planting densities. An on-farm was conducted over a three-year period to evaluate the effect of plant density on grain and fodder yiel...

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), 2019, "Leaf Stripping to Maximize Food and Feed Yields from Maize-Based Cropping Systems, Ghana", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/UKCEVO, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Feed shortages during the cropping season constrain to livestock production in small-scale crop-livestock systems in northern Ghana. The effect of stripping the lower leaves of maize at tasseling and silking to feed livestock on grain and stover yields of maize was tested over two years in northern Ghana.
