I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan. Prior to beginning this appointment, I was the Jeffrey L. Hyde and Sharon D. Hyde and Political Science Board of Visitors Early Career Professor in Political Science in the Department of Political Science at Penn State University. In June 2013, I graduated with a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, San Diego. I also studied at the University of North Texas, where I graduated with an M.S. in political science (2007), a B.F.A in drawing and painting (2005), and a B.A. in political science (2005). My core research focuses on the politics and measurement of human rights, discrimination, violence, and repression. I use computational methods to understand why governments around the world torture, maim, and kill individuals within their jurisdiction and the processes monitors use to observe and document these abuses. Other projects cover a broad array of themes but share a focus on computationally intensive methods and research design. These methodological tools, essential for analyzing data at massive scale, open up new insights into the micro-foundations of state repression and the politics of measurement. Please visit my website for more information about my research.

Brown, Cameron S.; Fariss, Christopher J.; McMahon, R. Blake, 2015, "Replication data for: Recouping after Coup-Proofing: Compromised Military Effectiveness and Strategic Substitution", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/29145, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:5:AWWmW4qZulpA7vp9n8AgcQ== [fileUNF]
In order to counter the threat of a coup, states often undertake a number of strategies to ``coup-proof'' their militaries, such as creating institutional redundancy, severely limiting interbranch communications, and basing promotions on loyalty rather than merit. As a result of such policies, however, the fighting effectiveness of these armed forc...

The latent Human Rights Protection Scores (version 2) available in this section were generated using a dynamic ordinal item-response theory model discussed at length in the two papers listed below. The newest version of this model is also dynamic in the treatment of the item-difficulty cut-points of the latent variable model (labeled the Dynamic St...

I present a foreign policy decision-making theory that accounts for why US food aid is used strategically when other more powerful economic aid tools are at the disposal of policy makers. I focus my analysis on US food aid because this aid program provides an excellent case with which to test for the empirical existence of foreign policy substituti...

David A. Lake; Christopher J. Fariss, 2013, "The Politics of External Authority in Areas of Limited Statehood", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/7GGDWT, Harvard Dataverse, V2
International trusteeship is widely touted as a solution to the problem of failed states, an extreme form of limited statehood. Current theories of legitimacy and statebuilding suggest that trusteeships should produce more capable states. These theories, however, fail to take into account the self-interest and political strategies available to trus...

The migration of political asylum seekers into the United States has long been a salient political topic; however, social scientists have yet to examine this process in its entirety, and in the context of political changes since September 11, 2001. Previous research shows that humanitarian and strategic interests are important for decisions made by...

The central purpose of this paper is to establish the relationship between power projection, technology and economic power. How economically powerful does a state need to be before it can afford the capital intensive technologies, foreign bases and military and logistical forces associated with global power projection? The specific research questio...
