This repository contains mostly data from randomized experiments in the social sciences, including data from studies run by researchers associated with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). Data, statistical code underlying published research results, surveys, and documentation are included. To download all materials from a study, locate the zip folder called "Dataverse materials" within each study. Each organization is responsible for curating and managing their own data. Contact for questions/comments: IPA (transparency@poverty-action.org) or J-PAL (data@povertyactionlab.org).

Duflo, Esther; Dupas, Pascaline; Kremer, Michael, 2016, "School governance, teacher incentives, and pupil–teacher ratios: Experimental evidence from Kenyan primary schools", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/9534YA, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Some education policymakers focus on bringing down pupil–teacher ratios. Others argue that resources will have limited impact without systematic reforms to education governance, teacher incentives, and pedagogy. We examine a program under which school committees at randomly selected Kenyan schools were funded to hire an additional teacher on an ann...

Duflo, Esther; Dupas, Pascaline; Kremer, Michael, 2015, "Education, HIV, and Early Fertility: Experimental Evidence from Kenya", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/TZG4WJ, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:riwuWIoLjZ89YPYYsWBOGQ== [fileUNF]
A seven-year randomized evaluation suggests education subsidies reduce adolescent girls’ dropout, pregnancy, and marriage but not sexually transmitted infection (STI). The government’s HIV curriculum, which stresses abstinence until marriage, does not reduce pregnancy or STI. Both programs combined reduce STI more, but cut dropout and pregnancy les...

Khan, Adnan Q; Khwaja, Asim I; Olken, Benjamin, 2015, "Replication Data for: Tax Farming Redux: Experimental Evidence on Performance Pay for Tax Collectors", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/MDHHQP, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Performance pay for tax collectors has the potential to raise revenues, but might come at a cost if it increases the bargaining power of tax collectors vis-à-vis taxpayers. We report the first large-scale field experiment on these issues, where we experimentally allocated 482 property tax units in Punjab, Pakistan, into one of three performance pay...

Angelucci, Manuela; Karlan, Dean; Zinman, Jonathan, 2014, "Microcredit Impacts: Evidence from a Randomized Microcredit Program Placement Experiment by Compartamos Banco", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/27850, Harvard Dataverse, V3, UNF:5:IBWk/0r39jdPWq6s8h7cFA== [fileUNF]
We use a clustered randomized trial, and over 16,000 household surveys, to estimate impacts at the community level from a group lending expansion at 110 percent APR by the largest microlender in Mexico. We find no evidence of transformative impacts on 37 outcomes (although some estimates have large confidence intervals), measured at a mean of 27 mo...

Ashraf, Nava; Giné, Xavier; Karlan, Dean, 2015, "Finding Missing Markets (and a disturbing epilogue): Evidence from an Export Crop Adoption and Marketing Intervention in Kenya", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/PES3RD, Harvard Dataverse, V1
Farmers may grow crops for local consumption despite more profitable export options. DrumNet, a Kenyan NGO that helps small farmers adopt and market export crops, conducted a randomized trial to evaluate its impact. DrumNet services increased production of export crops and lowered marketing costs, leading to a 32% income gain for new adopters. The s...

Guiteras, Raymond; Levinsohn, James; Mobarak, Ahmed Mushfiq, 2015, "Encouraging Sanitation Investment in the Developing World: A Cluster-Randomized Trial", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GJDUTV, Harvard Dataverse, V2
Poor sanitation contributes to morbidity and mortality in the developing world, but there is disagreement on what policies can increase sanitation coverage. To measure the effects of alternative policies on investment in hygienic latrines, we assigned 380 communities in rural Bangladesh to different marketing treatments—community motivation and inf...

Robinson, Jonathan, 2015, "Limited Insurance within the Household: Evidence from a Field Experiment in Kenya", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/0QZA4C, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:NrzAZPSj8ju+/mafoRbg8Q== [fileUNF]
In developing countries, unexpected income shocks are common but informal insurance is typically incomplete. An important question is therefore whether risk-sharing within the household is effective. This paper presents results from a field experiment with 142 married couples in Kenya in which individuals were given random income shocks. Even thoug...

Dupas, Pascaline, 2015, "Do Teenagers Respond to HIV Risk Information? Evidence from a Field Experiment in Kenya", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/DOBO88, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:EqKz1UF7qBUovz4VJZrnkg== [fileUNF]
We use a randomized experiment to test whether and what information changes teenagers' sexual behavior in Kenya. Providing information on the relative risk of HIV infection by partner's age led to a 28 percent decrease in teen pregnancy, an objective proxy for the incidence of unprotected sex. Self-reported sexual behavior data suggests substitutio...

Dupas, Pascaline; Robinson, Jonathan, 2015, "Why Don’t the Poor Save More? Evidence from Health Savings Experiments", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/7E9Y0H, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:0TohzFCR/wOUGyLq+4b2WQ== [fileUNF]
Using data from a field experiment in Kenya, we document that providing individuals with simple informal savings technologies can substantially increase investment in preventative health and reduce vulnerability to health shocks. Simply providing a safe place to keep money was sufficient to increase health savings by 66 percent. Adding an earmarkin...
