The Herschel Infrared Galactic plane survey (Hi-GAL) is an unbiased photometric survey covering |b| <= 1.0°, 68 > l > -70° in five passbands between 70 and 500 μm. The nominal beam sizes range from 5-35". Its key science goals include understanding the distribution of the ISM temperature, the formation of molecular clouds, the timeline of high-mass star formation, and the link between local and global star formation properties.
