The Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP), coordinated by WHO, was designed to address several outstanding questions related to the public health use of the RTS,S vaccine. Specifically, the MVIP assessed the feasibility of administering the recommended 4 doses of the vaccine in children; the vaccine’s potential role in reducing childhood deaths; and its safety in the context of routine use. Findings from the MVIP launched sub-nationally by the Ministries of Health in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi in 2019, formed a major contribution to the full evidence review and recommendation for the RTS,S malaria vaccine in 2021 by WHO’s advisory bodies on immunization (SAGE) and malaria (MPAG). The pilot implementations of the RTS,S vaccine was recommended by the WHO in 2016 and ended in December 2023.
