-- Nest_survey
This sheet presents data collected in the section "Chimpanzee tracking" of the manuscript. It represents information about chimpanzees sleeping platforms, the plants used as well as the characteristics of those plants. It contains the following variables:
Nesting_Site_Code: The code of the group of nests representing a group of chimpanzees who slept the same night
Nest_code: The code of a single nest
Animal_Species: The name of the animal species considered (Chimpanzee)
Plot_Code: The code of each botanical plot
Vegetation_Type: The vegetation type in which the nest was located
VEG: The abbreviation of the vegetation type
Plant_Code: The code of each individual plant used in nest building
Tree_Site: The combined codes of the tree and that of the nesting site
Tree_Nest: The combined code of the tree and that of the nest. Because some trees are used in many nests, it is important in determining the number of times a tree (a species) was used.
T_L_R_H: Characterizes a plant if it is a tree, a liana, a Raphia, or an herbaceous plant
Nest_height: The height of the nest
Species_Code: The unique code of each plant species in the database
Species: The scientific name of the plant species
Family: the family to which the plant species belongs
Tree_Height: The height of the tree from the ground to the crown of the tree. For liana, herbaceous, or sapling used in ground nests, the height was set to "NA"
DBH: The diameter at breast height of the tree. It was set to “NA” for herbaceous plants and saplings used in ground nests.
Nest_material: Indicates if the nest is made up of only trees, lianas, or herbaceous materials. It is “Mixed” if the nest is made on more than one plant type (tree, liana, and herb)
Integration: For the nests built in trees, the variable indicates if there was only one plant that is a tree used to build the nest, or if there was an integration between two trees (Tree-tree) or between a tree and a liana (Tree-liana)
Nest_Type: The type of nest based on the type of integration (top, side, top-top, top-side, side-side, top-liana, side-liana). Nests built on the ground are coded “Ground”
Nest_Type2: Indicates if the nest was built on the ground (Ground) or in a tree (Height)
