In 1630, Guillaume Le Vasseur, sieur de Beauplan, travelled to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to begin a seventeen-year military career in the Crown army. His account of this period was published in 1660 as La description d’Ukraine (https://www.worldcat.org/title/description-of-ukraine). In addition to providing a coherent tableau of 17th century Ukrainian landscape, peoples, flora, and climate, Beauplan’s work provides a major cartographic description of this region. The Beauplan’s Ukraine dataverse is a collection of three dataverses containing materials extracted from and associated with Beauplan’s works. The three Beauplan’s Ukraine dataverses are: 1. Beauplan’s Maps of Ukraine – Contains a dataverse library of 36 high-resolution images of maps ascribed to Beauplan, a visual map index dataverse that can aid in associating a particular Beauplan map with a current map of Ukraine and surrounding regions, and a dataverse of georeferenced versions of the 36 library maps that correspond to the contents of the visual map index. 2. Beauplan’s Places in Ukraine - Provides georeferenced databases for populated places, rivers, river fords, river rapids, islands, forests, springs, mountains, valleys, as well as travel routes and palatinate borders shown on Beauplan’s maps. 3. Base Maps of Ukraine - Includes maps for rivers and terrain elevation. All materials in this Beauplan’s Ukraine dataverse are in the public domain and can be downloaded under a CC0 1.0 Universal Deed (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/). A tutorial showing how to use the Beauplan’s Ukraine dataverse is available at: XXXXX.
