Post-surgical infection at the surfaces of implanted materials are one of the main causes for implant failure. The growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) suggests that antibiotics will not be as effective in treating infection in the future. Therefore, there is a need for alternative options for the prevention and treatment of implant-related infection. It is possible to dope implantable Calcium Phosphate biomaterials with foreign ions by substituting the ions in their crystal lattice with the dopant. By substituting ions with known antimicrobial properties, it is possible to obtain antibiotics-free biomaterials that can prevent implant-related infections from occurring. This work attempts to provide oversight into which ions have been found to confer antimicrobial properties to CaP materials.
