The George Washington University (GWU) / Politico Battleground Poll is a collaborative bi-partisan public opinion survey produced by Republican strategist Ed Goeas of The Tarrance Group and Democrat Celinda Lake of Lake Snell Perry and Associates. This national polling program focused on election politics in the United States offers the distinct perspectives of two top pollsters from different sides of the aisle. Battleground Polls are conducted, not for the benefit of any paying client, but to give the public a look at Americans' opinions and an inside peek at strategic recommendations for both political parties. The poll was supported by GW starting in 2004 until fall of 2018. The Battleground Poll has since been transferred to Georgetown University. While at GWU, the Poll was managed out of the GW Global Media Institute, a collaboration between the School of Media and Public Affairs and the Graduate School of Political Management. Contained within this collection are tabular data files for every year from 1993 until 2017 along with their corresponding data dictionary and associated documents received from the researchers. The data files have been uploaded in their original SPSS format and the data dictionaries were automatically generated by SPSS and exported to Excel for upload. Some years contain multiple data files related to particular months, seasons, or events (such as Democratic and Republican conventions). Each dataset has a two digit Battleground poll number as well as a unique five digit dataset identification number. The documents that are not data files include PDFs of weighted tables for particular datasets, explanatory documents, presentations, and other related materials. Each of these documents is within the folder for the Battleground poll dataset ID with which it is associated. Content differs by year with fewer materials from early years of the survey and more files from election years. Files originate from June 1991 - December 2017. Files from 1991 - 1996 are generally limited to aggregate reports.
