The Bertarelli Foundation established its Indian Ocean focussed marine science programme in 2017 to advance the understanding of how large marine protected areas function and they can be better managed.

This programme is an endorsed action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and addresses the protection of marine biodiversity and securing ocean health, and uses science to inform management and conservation. Whilst the programme focuses on the Indian Ocean, the research and other outcomes are applicable to scientists and conservationists around the globe.

The programme currently involves 96 researchers from 24 institutions and nine countries. Projects are, by design, collaborative and interdisciplinary and each of them includes partners from the Indian Ocean, with a total involvement of 35 regional institutions.

Lange, I; Benkwitt, CE; McDevitt-Irwin, JM; Tietjen, KL; Taylor, B; Chinkin, M; Gunn, RL; Palmisciano, M; Steyaert, M; Wilson, B; East, H; Turner, J; Graham, NAJ; Perry, CT, 2024, "Wave exposure shapes reef community composition and recovery trajectories at a remote coral atoll (dataset)", https://doi.org/10.24378/EXE.3523
In a time of unprecedented ecological change, understanding natural biophysical relationships between reef resilience and physical drivers is of increasing importance. This study evaluates how wave forcing structures coral reef benthic community composition and recovery trajectories after the major 2015/2016 bleaching event in the remote Chagos Arc...

Courtney, Travis A; Chan, Stephen; Lange, Ines D; Perry, Chris T; Kriegman, David J; Andersson, Andreas J, 2025, "Area-normalized scaling of ReefBudget calcification, macrobioerosion, and microbioerosion rates for use with CoralNet Version 1.0", https://doi.org/10.5281/ZENODO.5140477, Zenodo
The following code generates area-normalized calcification, macrobioerosion, and microbioerosion rates from ReefBudget methodologies (http://geography.exeter.ac.uk/reefbudget/; Perry et al., 2018; Perry and Lange 2019) for use with CoralNet image identification labels to support the integration of estimated carbonate production rates with CoralNet,...

Hays, Graeme C.; Chivers, William J.; Jacques-Olivier Laloë; Sheppard, Charles; Esteban, Nicole, 2024, "Supplementary material from "Impact of marine heatwaves for sea turtle nest temperatures"", https://doi.org/10.6084/M9.FIGSHARE.C.5416983.V1
There are major concerns about the ecological impact of extreme weather events. In the oceans, marine heatwaves (MHWs) are an increasing threat causing, for example, recent devastation to coral reefs around the world. We show that these impacts extend to adjacent terrestrial systems and could negatively affect the breeding of endangered species. We...
