Research by this team has shown how seabird guano can enhance coral reef productivity, biodiversity, and how they work. The team are conducting this research in the Chagos Archipelago, Seychelles, and French Polynesia, incorporating into their study sites, islands with and without rats, and those with ongoing rat eradication programmes. The research will help inform tropical island conservation and restoration efforts all around the world.

Appoo, Jennifer, 2025, "Seabird nutrient subsidies enrich mangrove ecosystems and are exported to nearby coastal habitats", https://doi.org/10.5061/DRYAD.0RXWDBS79, Dryad
In this study, we investigate how mangrove ecosystems respond to nutrient subsidies supplied by nesting seabirds. We first quantify seabird guano nutrient input and seabird guano nitrogen isotopes. We then assess the influence of seabirds on mangroves by comparing nitrogen, phosphorus, nutrient ratios and resoprtion efficiency in mangrove leaves sa...

Pelagic-feeding seabirds deliver nutrient subsidies that enhance the productivity, biodiversity, and resilience of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, particularly in nutrient-poor tropical environments. However, the biogeophysical variables governing the fluxes of these nutrients within and among interconnected ecosystems remain poorly understood....

Restoration is increasingly seen as a necessary tool to reverse ecological decline across terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Considering the unprecedented loss of coral cover and associated reef ecosystem services, active coral restoration is gaining traction in local management strategies and has recently seen major increases in scale. However, th...

Coral growth is an important metric of coral health and underpins reef-scale functional attributes such as structural complexity and calcium carbonate production. There persists, however, a paucity of growth data for most reef-building regions, especially for coral species whose skeletal architecture prevents the use of traditional methods such as...

Lange, I; Perry, C; Stuhr, M, 2024, "Recovery trends of reef carbonate budgets at remote coral atolls six years post-bleaching (dataset)", https://doi.org/10.24378/EXE.3863
Coral bleaching events and resultant changes in benthic community composition and population size structure can diminish the important geo-ecological functions reefs provide, including habitat provision and carbonate production to support reef accretion. Net reef carbonate budgets, the balance between carbonate production and erosion processes, are...
