The Bertarelli Foundation established its Indian Ocean focussed marine science programme in 2017 to advance the understanding of how large marine protected areas function and they can be better managed.

This programme is an endorsed action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and addresses the protection of marine biodiversity and securing ocean health, and uses science to inform management and conservation. Whilst the programme focuses on the Indian Ocean, the research and other outcomes are applicable to scientists and conservationists around the globe.

The programme currently involves 96 researchers from 24 institutions and nine countries. Projects are, by design, collaborative and interdisciplinary and each of them includes partners from the Indian Ocean, with a total involvement of 35 regional institutions.

Restoration is increasingly seen as a necessary tool to reverse ecological decline across terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Considering the unprecedented loss of coral cover and associated reef ecosystem services, active coral restoration is gaining traction in local management strategies and has recently seen major increases in scale. However, th...

This catalogue covers the reef benthos of mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) of the Chagos Archipelago (6° S, 71°30’ E), central Indian Ocean. The in-situ images presented here were collected during two expeditions, in November 2019 and March 2020. A Saab Seaeye Falcon Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) was used to collect benthic imagery of MCEs. Six...

Lange, I; Molina-Hernández, A; Medellín-Maldonado, F; Perry, CTP; Álvarez-Filip, L, 2024, "Structure-from-motion photogrammetry demonstrates variability in coral growth within colonies and across habitats (dataset)", https://doi.org/10.24378/EXE.4285
Coral growth is an important metric of coral health and underpins reef-scale functional attributes such as structural complexity and calcium carbonate production. There persists, however, a paucity of growth data for most reef-building regions, especially for coral species whose skeletal architecture prevents the use of traditional methods such as...

How animals navigate across the ocean to isolated targets remains perplexing greater than 150 years since this question was considered by Charles Darwin. To help solve this long-standing enigma, we considered the likely resolution of any map sense used in migration, based on the navigational performance across different scales (tens to thousands of...

Lange, I; Perry, C; Stuhr, M, 2024, "Recovery trends of reef carbonate budgets at remote coral atolls six years post-bleaching (dataset)", https://doi.org/10.24378/EXE.3863
Coral bleaching events and resultant changes in benthic community composition and population size structure can diminish the important geo-ecological functions reefs provide, including habitat provision and carbonate production to support reef accretion. Net reef carbonate budgets, the balance between carbonate production and erosion processes, are...
