The Bertarelli Foundation established its Indian Ocean focussed marine science programme in 2017 to advance the understanding of how large marine protected areas function and they can be better managed.

This programme is an endorsed action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 and addresses the protection of marine biodiversity and securing ocean health, and uses science to inform management and conservation. Whilst the programme focuses on the Indian Ocean, the research and other outcomes are applicable to scientists and conservationists around the globe.

The programme currently involves 96 researchers from 24 institutions and nine countries. Projects are, by design, collaborative and interdisciplinary and each of them includes partners from the Indian Ocean, with a total involvement of 35 regional institutions.

Pelagic Predators(Stanford University / Zoological Society of London)
Dec 3, 2024
The aim of this research is to provide an accurate representation of how the Chagos Archipelago Marine Protected Area (MPA) protects key species of pelagic predators. Lead investigators: Prof. Barbara Block (Stanford University), Dr. David Curnick (Zoological Society of London).
Chagos Brain Coral(University of Oxford)
Dec 3, 2024
Recent decades have seen unprecedented levels of coral reef mortality at a global scale. The Chagos brain coral (Ctenella chagius) is endemic, critcally endangered and considered the rarest coral in world. We are therefore developing and implementing a species survival plan for this species. Lead investigator: Dr. Bryan Wilson (University of Oxford...
Plastic pollution (Zoological Society of London/Swansea University)
Dec 3, 2024
Zoological Society of London and Swansea University have been working to understand the sources, distribution and impacts of plastic pollution in marine habitats in the Indian Ocean.
Shark Genomics Seascapes(Stanford University)
Dec 3, 2024
This study is working to create a genomic seascape, or comprehensive DNA catalogue, of reef shark populations within the Indian Ocean which will enable enhanced tracking of shark populations. By matching genetic signatures of illegally fished sharks with those of catalogued populations, the location of areas that are being targeted by illegal fishe...
